Micky Mellon speaks ahead of Wimbledon game

Micky Mellon has spoken ahead of this weekend’s clash with AFC Wimbledon at Prenton Park.

After a draw on the road at Swindon last week, Mellon is taking the positives from the performance and says the one point picked up could have been all three on reflection.

“We’re Tranmere and we want to win every game first and foremost. We never went to Swindon to draw the game, we want to try and win every game. On the balance of play I think we had the better chances but it’s always a difficult place to go.

“The players showed a lot of great qualities and we had a lot of good performances right throughout the group. As always, there’s things that we want to work on and get better at but it was another good performance on the road for us.”

Rovers currently sit in 11th place in the division, just four points outside of the playoffs. Micky gave his thoughts on the expectations on himself and the squad this campaign.

“I have to be careful what I say because I don’t want to sound not ambitious. We knew at the start of the season that it was going to be a different type of job with a lot of younger players and less experience. So we needed to see how quickly we could make this group grow because we have to cut our cloth accordingly as we keep saying.

“I always want us to be competing at the top end of the division but even I have to be patient at times and understand that we’re a young group and a growing group. I believe that we’re getting better and showing positive signs against teams who have invested heavily in their teams. I’m not complaining about that, I’m just talking about where we are.

“We have a lot of players who are only in their first or second season in the league and they are certainly holding their own. We’re coming away from the games now thinking ‘we could have or should have won that game’. We have to find the consistency of that.

“We want to win every game but sometimes you’ve got to take a step back and realise that’s where we are at.”

AFC Wimbledon make the trip to Wirral currently occupying 15th place in League Two and the Gaffer gave his assessment of the Wombles ahead of the clash.

“Like us, they’ve done well with a very young group as well. They’ll have a lot of energy and a lot of ambition in their group so it should make for a really good game. We’ll be ready, we’ve had a good week of preparation and we want to grow from last week’s performance so we’re looking forward to it.

“We attack every game and try to win it and if we do the things that we’re capable of doing well then we’ll give ourselves a good chance of getting a result.”
