Micky Mellon says that his side is looking forward to another challenge this weekend and will not look for any excuses as a busy schedule of travelling kicks in.
“It is what it is. We’ll travel down and prepare like we always do and we definitely won’t look for any excuses. We’re experienced at it now, we’ll get on with it and give ourselves the best opportunity of getting a result out of it.
“I’m not surprised that we’re starting to get into a little bit of a rhythm. I know it takes time and it’s still going to take time to keep it going. There’s lots of potential in this group to keep getting better and better.”
Having recruited a number of new faces and been quite open about a change in system, the Gaffer insists that time and patience is the key to making everything come together.
“When you put a new group of players together and play a new system, it’s going to take time and it’s going to need finding consistency. We want to get better at everything, scoring, defending and everything in between because you always want to improve and push the players to their limits.
“We work very hard on trying to score goals and we set out the team on Tuesday night to go and do that but we just weren’t able to take the chances that we made for ourselves. We’ll look for improvement on that like we do with everything.”
With a trip to south Wales on Saturday, Micky makes no bones about the task that is ahead for his players at Rodney Parade.
“You can always guarantee that Newport will be a difficult place to go and we’ve certainly found that over the years. We’ll absolutely need to be at our best, we need to perform and do a lot of the good stuff we’ve been working on. We need to go down there with that mentality and get it right.”
