Merseyside Police Rugby Union Football Club (MPRUFC) are this year celebrating 60 (continuous) years of rugby!

Records suggest that the club actually dates back to the 1930s, however, it is officially acknowledged that it wasn’t until April 1960, post-WWII and then the club folding in the 50s, that it was re-established on a regular basis.

Since then, the club has seen multiple police personnel and their families pass through its doors, welcoming all abilities who share a passion for the sport.

Over the years, the club has grown and is made up of an array of both retired or still serving police officers and staff.

Club Chair, Simon Thompson, who himself started playing for the club in 1986 said: “The past twelve months have been challenging times for everyone and although we can’t celebrate the clubs anniversary in the normal way of a club dinner, instead we have created a unique rugby shirt has been designed and is available to view and buy online at the club store .

“As a club, we also wanted to commemorate the late Roger Corker, our founding father, who sadly passed away in 2012. He worked tirelessly to ensure the promotion and survival of the club, so the shirt features his initials, RC.”

The coronavirus pandemic has meant that the club have had to cancel the season, however they are still playing touch rugby at Riversdale police club every Saturday 10-12 and welcome any new members that would like to get involved.

Simon continued: “When I joined the club in the 80s, I had never played rugby before (football was my forte!). But, I soon found my feet as a ‘hooker’ and played well into the late 2000’s. A spot of ill health in 2008 pretty much ended my playing days but I have managed to get back on the pitch for a few games over the years.

“It just goes to show that, with the right supportive and friendly people around you, you can find passions and skills for sports or activities you had never considered previously. So, if you too want to come along, all you need are a pair of boots! It really is a good morning out and if that hasn’t sold you enough, there is also a refreshment van!”

The club are currently looking to set up a women’s and junior team – please get in touch if you’d like to know more – all are welcome!
