Merseyside Police Inspector charged with assaulting suspect in Birkenhead

Three Merseyside Police officers will appear in court today after being charged following investigations by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

The IOPC looked at the conduct of three officers during and after the arrest of a man, who subsequently made a complaint about the incident.

The man alleged he had been assaulted by Inspector Andrew Minnery during the incident in Grasville Road, Tranmere on 6 March 2020.

Additionally, two police constables have been charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice.

On completion of the two investigations in October 2021, the IOPC referred the matter to the Crown Prosecution Service, which authorised the following charges:

  • Insp Andrew Minnery, 46 – assault occasioning actual bodily harm and attempting to pervert the course of justice;
  • PC Kenny Gibson, 39 – attempting to pervert the course of justice;
  • PC Steve Cotton, 44 – attempting to pervert the course of justice.

The three officers are due to appear at Westminster Magistrates Court today, Friday 25 March 2022.
