McCann’s strike secures victory for Forest Green over Tranmere

Tranmere visited Forest Green Rovers on Saturday afternoon in their latest game of the League 2 season.

Ahead of the game, Nigel Adkins said, “The Stockport game is now gone, and we’ve got to focus on the next game, which is Forest Green. Do not take that for granted, because it’s going to be a tough game. A good manager has just come in, experienced, knows what he’s doing. Forest Green have probably got the second or third best budget in the league. They shouldn’t be where they are, but they are for a reason. That won’t last, I still think they’re going to be picking up points.

“This is a tough game. Our players are well aware. When we do the debriefs, we learn the lessons with previous games and then we draw a blue line underneath it. That game is then gone, and we do everything we can to plan and prepare for the next game, so we arrive fit, fresh, organized and ready to go and do the best we can.”

Tranmere Rovers suffered a disappointing 1-0 loss away to Forest Green Rovers on Saturday afternoon.

Charlie McCann netted the sole goal just before half time, shooting past Luke McGee from a distance.

In the second half, Tranmere pressed forward, and Forest Green had to defend with ten men as Ryan Inniss received a second yellow card.

A positive note for Tranmere was the return of Luke Norris, making a comeback after a lengthy foot injury, coming on in the 60th minute.

The first half was generally quiet, but the home team displayed early initiative. McCann’s attempt was blocked by Lee O’Connor, and Emmanuel Osadebe delivered a low cross that evaded everyone.

The opening 20 minutes saw no significant goal-scoring opportunities, although Connor Jennings directed a header wide from a cross by Rob Apter.

Apter later cut inside his marker, unleashing a shot on target that Vicente Reyes adeptly saved.

The winger remained active a few minutes later when Regan Hendry provided an exquisite wide pass. Apter controlled it well, advanced towards the Forest Green defence, and took a shot. His attempt deflected and was pushed wide by the goalkeeper.

McGee made a notable save, thwarting Harvey Bunker’s long-range attempt. Nevertheless, the hosts secured the lead just before halftime when McCann skillfully found the corner of the goal from a distance.

Reyes posed a consistent challenge for Rovers throughout the afternoon and made another commendable save to deny Harvey Saunders ten minutes into the second half. Apter then curled a shot over the bar moments later.

Tranmere persisted in their attacking efforts, and with Luke Norris returning from injury, skipper Tom Davies witnessed his long-range shot bouncing around before eventually being cleared.

Forest Green remained resolute as Rovers fervently sought an equaliser. Inniss received a second yellow card just before injury time for a late challenge on Jennings in the midfield.

Eight minutes of added time were indicated, providing Nigel Adkins’ side with opportunities to draw level. First, Jennings headed over from a Reece McAlear cross.

Then, in the dying moments, Apter’s attempt rolled wide before Jordan Turnbull’s shot was blocked. Despite a flurry of Rovers’ attempts, the ten-man hosts stood firm, securing the victory.

Tranmere visit Swindon Town on Tuesday, 27 February, for their next game of the 2023/24 League Two season.
