Match Report – League 2 – Tranmere Rovers 3, Port Vale 1

Keith Hill’s men hosted Port Vale at Prenton Park this afternoon with goals from Kaiyne Woolery and James Vaughan securing victory.

With this result, Tranmere move into the automatic promotion places in League Two with fans hoping they can keep it that way until the end of the season.

Rovers’ Paul Lewis had an attempt denied by the bar from six yards, following a corner.

Kaiyne Woolery opened the scoring at 17 minutes with a right footed shot from outside the box to the bottom left corner, assisted by Jay Spearing.

A Woolery assist for Vaughan paid off when he launched a die-straight shot that went in off the post to make it 2-0 after 30 minutes.

Vaughan scored either side of half-time and either side of a goal from Port Vale’s Jake Taylor just before half-time.

Vaughan should have made it three moments later but he was left ruing the missed chance as Taylor fired a low shot through keeper Scott Davies to pull one back before the break.

Vaughan squandered two chances, one just after Tranmere’s second goal and another, just minutes into the second half, from just 8 yards out, volleying directly at the Port Vale goalie, Brown.

Tranmere fans will be celebrating following this afternoon’s match, which notches up a run of five league wins and places them at third in the league.

Matt Hibbert’s thoughts…

Another solid performance, up into the automatic placed, didn’t really get out of 2nd gear and didn’t need to.

Some lovely football played especially in that 25-minute spell in the first half; Tranmere should’ve been 3 or 4 up at half-time.

It’s all about keeping the momentum going, we’re playing Saturday/Tuesday now for the rest of the season, we need some luck with injuries/covid, and then we’ve got every chance of being up there come May.
