Match Report – League 2 – Morecambe 0, Tranmere Rovers 1

In the first home league defeat since October for the Shrimps, Kaiyne Woolery scored the only goal to give Tranmere took a 1-0 victory at Morecambe to move up to fifth place in League Two.

Woolery found the target 16 minutes from time when he headed home a left-wing cross from close range, earning his side the three points. Morecambe were reduced to 10 men in the 45th minute after Yann Songo’o was sent off for using foul and abusive language.

For once, Tranmere capitalised on the one-man advantage. Otis Khan punted two attempts on goal wide of the target. Paul Lewis forced a good save from Morecambe’s goalie Kyle Letheren before Woolery’s opened the scoring.

James Vaughan headed Khan’s cross wide of a post before driving a low shot just wide from the edge of the area.

Morecambe wasted an opportunity to take the lead in the 38th minute when Adam Phillips sky-rocketed a penalty over the bar after Jay Spearing had handled a shot in the area.

Rovers host Port Vale at Prenton Park in the league on Saturday 6 February, after hosting Peterborough United on Tuesday in the EFL Trophy.

Matt Hibbert’s thoughts…

A hard fought win in horrendous windy conditions at the seaside, and as I said after the Harrogate game in midweek, another win by a 1 goal margin, these are the wins that get you promoted.

That’s now 4 wins in a row in the league, and we’re starting to look like a really solid outfit, onto Port Vale next Saturday at Prenton Park.
