Match Report – EFL Trophy 3rd Round – Tranmere Rovers 4, Leicester U21s 2

Tranmere Rovers’ victory over Leicester City Under-21s last night secured them a place in the Papa John’s EFL Trophy quarter-finals.

Tranmere were 3-1 up at half-time, with a goal from Ferrier in the opening five minutes and two goals from Danny Lloyd at 37 and 45+1 minutes after the U21s Wakeling had levelled the score line, albeit briefly, at 36 minutes.

Blackett-Taylor increased the lead at 53 minutes, before Leicester’s Suengchitthawon grabbed the visitors’ second goal at 56 minutes, as the game finished 4-2.

Leicester was, until this point, the only remaining academy team in the competition.

Tranmere is the only remaining team from League Two in the last eight, with the seven other remaining clubs all from League One.

Tranmere will be joined by Sunderland, Lincoln City, and Hull City who also made it through from the Northern Section of round 3, and also by AFC Wimbledon, MK Dons, Oxford United, and Peterborough United who progressed from the Southern Section.

The draw for the quarter-finals takes place on Saturday, 23 January and unlike previous rounds, there will be no regionalisation.

Portsmouth is yet to play the delayed 2019-20 EFL Trophy final against Salford City, with talks continuing over a new date for the match. The final, which was originally scheduled for 5 April 2020, was postponed with no new date confirmed because of the restrictions put in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It has been rescheduled for 2021, with no date yet agreed.
