Man jailed for three years for arson attack on car

A man has been jailed for more than three years for arson offences after a car was set alight in Wirral.

Brian Nolan, 47 years, of Prenton was sentenced to three years and four months in prison after pleading guilty at Liverpool Crown Court today, Friday 21 October.

He also received a five-year restraining order.

On the morning of 14 August, an Audi A4 car parked on Bidston Avenue, Claughton, was reported to be on fire.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene and extinguished the flames. Firefighters contacted Merseyside Police as they suspected it was a deliberate ignition and an investigation commenced.

On 15 August detectives arrested Nolan, and he was charged with arson with recklessness to endanger life and two counts of threats to commit arson.

Detective Sergeant Nicholas Glascott-Tull said, “We welcome this sentence as it prevents Nolan from putting people’s lives in danger by committing such a reckless act.

“To deliberately set fire to a car is stupid and reckless, risking the lives of innocent people walking by and residents in nearby houses. The consequences could have been catastrophic and have caused fear and worry within the community.

“I hope Nolan uses the time in jail to reflect on his behaviour, and the significant impact it has had on his victims with the arson attack and his threats to them after the incident.”

Anyone who has information about crime in the community can contact Merseyside Police by sending a DM to @MerPolCC, calling 101 or contacting Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. Always call 999 in an emergency.

You can also contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
