Man dies in Birkenhead flat fire

Emergency services were called out to a fire at a property in Birkenhead last night, Monday 2 May.

Fire crews, police and North West Ambulance Service were called to a serious fire at a flat in Laurence Deacon Court, St. Anne Street, Birkenhead yesterday evening.

Fire crews were alerted at 8.45pm and on the scene at 8.48pm. Three fire engines were in attendance.

Firefighters arrived to find a fire at a ground floor flat and entered under rapid deployment, with firefighters wearing breathing apparatus and fighting the fire with hose reel jets.

The fire has now been extinguished. 

An initial investigation into the incident is taking place. 

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) extinguished the fire before discovering the body of a man at the property.

A spokesperson for MFRS said, “Sadly we can now confirm that during their search of the flat firefighters discovered the body of a man in the property. His next of kin have been informed and a joint investigation is underway with Merseyside Police into the cause of the fire.”

A joint investigation is underway between Merseyside Police and MFRS to establish the cause of the fire.
