Local businesses step up to provide kids’ half-term meals

Whilst ministers are continuing to insist they will not fund free school meals during half-term, local businesses have stepped up to the mark to provide free kid’s meals during the school break.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson faces increased pressure to reverse his stance on the unpopular policy from across the political spectrum, including from some Tory MPs.

A number of local businesses have taken on the responsibility of helping out during difficult times and have shown real community spirit, prompting Councillor Janette Williamson, Leader of Wirral Council to say, “I want to personally thank all the businesses & community groups who have come together, and are working with the Council this week, to support families during half term.”

Angela Moran, Co-owner of Zero Clucks Given said, “Growing up in Birkenhead we know what poverty feels like first hand and how hard life can be. When a government that doesn’t seem to be able to grasp the meaning of compassion stoops so low as to letting disadvantaged children go without food when the schools are closed it’s time that communities come together and step in to help. Life’s hard enough as it is at the moment without this to worry about too. So with us being fortunate enough to be in a position to help people who are struggling at the moment, it was a no brainer for us to offer a free meal to any child over the half-term break.”

…this is why in light of this despicable government’s decision not to support vulnerable children over the half term…
