Liscard council by-election to take place in July

A by-election is taking place in Liscard on Thursday 22 July to elect a new councillor for the ward following the resignation of Labour Councillor Sarah Spoor, who stood down for personal reasons.

Former Liscard councillor, Sarah Spoor said, “After much consideration, sadly, I have made a decision to step down as Liscard Ward Councillor.

“I have been struggling to balance council duties with my family life and my employment. Combining work, family and caring responsibilities are not new to me, I have brought up five children and have always managed to maintain work/life balance, however this year has been a difficult year for us all. More than ever, I appreciate that time is the most precious thing that we have or have to give.

Voters have a range of options for casting their ballot for the by-election – it can be in person, by post or by appointing someone they trust to vote in their place, known as a proxy vote. COVID-19 safe measure are place to help voters.

Electors who are eligible to vote will receive their polling card by Friday 25 June 2021. Residents who have not received a polling card by this date can check they are on the electoral register by contacting the helpline number below.

There are TWO fast-approaching deadlines that all voters need to be aware of to make sure they are eligible to vote:

  1.  You need to be registered to vote to have your say at the election.  If you are not already registered to vote, you can register online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote   The deadline to register to vote, for this election, is Tuesday 6 July 2021. (Online registration deadline is 11.59pm on 6 July 2021.)
  2.  New proxy or postal vote applications, amendments, or cancellation of existing postal or proxy votes must be received by the Electoral Registration Officer at Wirral Tennis Centre, Valley Road Bidston, CH41 7EJ by 5pm on Wednesday 7 July 2021.  If you are thinking about voting by post or by proxy, please apply early to make sure your application is processed as soon as possible.

At the polling station you can expect many of the measures you have become used to in shops and banks over recent months, such as wearing a face covering, social distancing, use of hand sanitiser and floor markings.

Voting will take place between 7am – 10pm on Thursday 22 July 2021. The votes will be verified and counted that evening and a councillor for the Liscard ward will be elected.
