Morecambe staged a comeback from a two-goal deficit to secure a dramatic 3-2 victory against Tranmere at Prenton Park on Tusday evening.

Rob Apter slotted home a pass from Harvey Saunders to open the scoring, followed by Connor Jennings nailing his tenth goal of the season from the penalty spot after Saunders was fouled.

Morecambe swiftly responded as Charlie Brown struck a precise shot into the top corner four minutes later. Substitute Jordan Slew levelled the score at 2-2 ten minutes from the end.

In a dramatic turn, Jacob Davenport’s 25-yard free kick found the top corner in stoppage time, securing maximum points for the Shrimps.

Rovers took the lead within four minutes as Saunders dispossessed Morecambe captain Jacob Bedeau, setting up Apter for his seventh goal of the season.

Tranmere’s jubilation doubled swiftly, along with their lead. Connor Wood delivered an impeccably placed through ball to Saunders, who was fouled, resulting in a penalty for the hosts. Jennings confidently stepped up, smashing the ball down the middle past Archie Mair.

Nevertheless, Morecambe remained competitive, reducing the deficit in the 14th minute. Julian Larsson’s attempt deflected to Brown, who unleashed a powerful shot into the far corner, marking three goals in the early stages of the game.

The visitors sought a quick equaliser, prompting Luke McGee to make a crucial save from Gerard Garner’s first-time volley inside the box. Larsson’s curling effort narrowly went over moments later.

Amid Morecambe’s ball dominance, Regan Hendry and Kieron Morris received yellow cards. Joseph Adams attempted a box entry but faced a robust tackle from Lee O’Connor, preventing a shot. The Shrimps midfielder fired two edge-of-the-box attempts that were blocked, earning a yellow card for a challenge on Apter during a counter.

Apter showcased his agility on the right wing and, just before half time, delivered a cross towards the back post that transformed into a scoring opportunity, narrowly missing the top of Mair’s goal.

Bedeau’s header from a corner went just wide five minutes into the second half, as the away team persisted in their quest for an equalizer.

Rovers intensified their efforts to widen the lead. Apter’s volley was thwarted, followed by Saunders firing over moments later.

Nelson Khumbeni received a booking for tripping Hendry as Tranmere sought to initiate a counter. The hosts had the opportunity to construct another attack, initiated by Hendry in his own half, ultimately concluding with the Scotsman side-footing the ball into the arms of Mair.

Losing possession in midfield, Morecambe allowed O’Connor to gather, who then connected with Apter through an exceptional through ball. Despite a rapid sprint into the box, Apter couldn’t beat Mair with his low one-on-one effort.

The Shrimps began to appear somewhat unsteady in possession, enabling Tranmere to capitalize on loose passes, creating additional scoring opportunities. Hendry’s shot was blocked, and Apter forced Mair into a low save from the edge of the box.

Joel Senior delivered a free kick that only required a slight touch to level the scores, but somehow, his delivery eluded everyone in the penalty area. Slew then tested McGee with a close-range effort, resulting in a strong save.

Nevertheless, the Morecambe substitute equalized in the 82nd minute, smashing the ball into the roof of the net from Senior’s right-sided cross.

Jennings took a long-range shot towards the end, narrowly missing the far post as stoppage time approached. On the opposite side, Senior’s low drive met McGee’s gloves as both teams sought a decisive goal.

The decisive moment arrived with a Davenport free kick that soared into the top corner from 25 yards. It was a moment of late heartbreak for Rovers, as Morecambe secured the points and left with the victory.

Tranmere host Stockport County on Saturday, 17 February, for their next game of the 2023/24 League Two season.
