Late goal not enough as Lairds defeated by New Mills

In Cammell Laird 1907 FC’s first fixture for three weeks in the North West Counties First Division South, due to the bad weather, they entertained basement club New Mills and provided a performance best forgotten.

A disastrous first half of missed chances, lack of control and slack defending saw Lairds slip to a demoralising defeat, as very little went their way.

With only three minutes on the clock, New Mills easily passed their way through a back-pedaling defence to take the lead as Rob Payne scored with ease.

Lairds fought back but contrived to miss three easy chances to level before Sam Deering doubled the visitors’ lead in the 35th minute and two minutes before the break Anthony Hall made it 3-0 when left unmarked to score. HT 0-3.

Although improving in the second half Lairds failed to take advantage of opportunities created, with the visitors newly signed keeper Josh Oldham making some excellent saves and they had to wait until the 84th minute to reduce the arrears when James Eaton headed home at the back post.

This proved to be too little too late and Lairds slumped to a poor defeat due to costly errors both offensively and defensively.

Their next fixture is on Boxing Day with a trip to Ashville FC with a 12 noon kick off.
