Large pothole causes Wallasey Tunnel lane closure

A large pothole in the roadway of the Kingsway tunnel forced MerseyTravel to close the Wallasey to Liverpool tube until 3pm today, when both tubes of the tunnel were operating.

Drivers could still use the Kingsway tunnel as MerseyTravel had implemented lane changes in the second tube.

Earlier, MerseyTravel tweeted that “The South Tube of the … Wallasey tunnel is currently closed, due to a large pothole appearing in the road.”

It is expected that the closure and diversions will laset for “a few hours.”

As the tunnel reopened, birkenhead.news spoke to MerseyTravel and a spokesperson said,“Due to damage to the roadway, the south tube of the Kingsway (Wallasey) Tunnel was closed to traffic for a period of around three hours.

“The north tube of the tunnel remained open to traffic, as did the Queensway (Birkenhead) Tunnel, and the disruption caused was minimal.

“Emergency repairs have been undertaken and the incident has now been resolved and south tube of the tunnel has now reopened to traffic. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
