Cammell Laird 1907 FC, current Wirral District FA Senior Cup holders, faced a tough challenge from West Cheshire team, Higher Bebington Kelma, as the match was decided on a penalty shoot-out.
The entire 90 minutes was a dour battling fixture as both teams created and wasted chances, but Lairds did break the deadlock in the 38th minute as Joel Oriugo found the net to put the home team 1-0 up at half time.
The second period saw Kelma push Lairds all the way and with time running out they broke clear and Tom Byrne levelled the tie in the 85th minute and this led to a nerve-wracking penalty decider which Lairds won 4-3.
James Dineley the Lairds keeper made two excellent saves which allowed for Jack Kelly, Lee Rodgers, Jack Wood and finally Kalif Koura to net the winning goal in a hard-fought success.
Lairds now play Capenhurst Villa away in the semi-final on Saturday 4 March.
It’s back to league business on Saturday as Lairds visit table-topping Stockport Town for a 3.00pm kick off.
