Lairds’ spirited performance falls short with loss to Abbey Hey

Despite a lively home match in the North West Counties First Division South against the third-placed Abby Hey, played on a well-maintained pitch by groundsman John King that held up admirably despite recent adverse weather conditions, Lairds managed to equalize twice after falling behind by two goals. However, they were unable to prevent a loss.

Opening exchanges were lively but the visitors looked the more dangerous and on 16 minutes they took the lead when Ashley Woods found the net. Lairds fought back but failed to create the openings required and trailed 1-0 at the interval.

The same pattern emerged in the second half with Abbey Hey increasing their lead on the hour mark thanks to a Will Shawcross goal, but substitute James Eaton hit back immediately to reduce the arrears within a minute.

But slack marking allowed Dillon Edmundson to make it 3-1 in the 65th minute as Hey regained their two goal advantage, before Matty Beaman headed a great goal for Lairds in the 76th minute to bring them back into the game and James Eaton levelled matters three minutes later with a fine effort.

With Ross Waring urging his team on it looked like a well-deserved point, but a reckless challenge in the 96th minute gifted the visitors a penalty, which Will Shawcross despatched expertly and Abby Hey retained their top three billing with a 4-3 victory whilst plunging Lairds into the bottom three of the division.

Lairds are at home again at the KRTC Stadium versus Abbey Hulton on 6 January 2024 with a 3.00pm kick off.

Lairds reserves team led by John Leasor and Danny Wilson continued their assault on the West Cheshire Third division title when travelling to West Kirby reserves and recording a 3-1 success that keeps them in second place and only one point behind the leaders with two games in hand.

Jack Kelly bagged a brace and man of the match Kieran Hughes added his usual effort in a strong team performance to continue their unbeaten run since September and finish the calendar year off in style.

The next two fixtures are a doubleheader versus Rainhill Reserves in the league and cup to be played on 13 and 20 January 2024.
