Due to Cammell Laird 1907 FC 1st team being without a fixture, the reserves took centre stage in an entertaining West Cheshire third division league encounter with Rainhill Town Reserves
Lairds claimed an excellent 3-1 victory to put them top of the division by two points and with a game in hand.
Hosts, Lairds, began brightly and only had to wait until the 15th minute to open their account as Thomas Taffe finished off a fine move to grab the opener.
Good build-up work saw a number of chances go begging, but with only minutes remaining of the half they increased their lead when Cy Sullivan added a second goal for a 2-0 interval advantage.
The visitors remained a threat throughout the second period as the game ebbed and flowed but following a corner team captain Peter Charles rose head and shoulders above the home defence to score a brilliant header on the hour mark to put Lairds 3-0 ahead.
The closing stages saw plenty of tired legs and the visitors reduced the arrears with a late goal from Harry Summerford, but Lairds deserved their victory for a solid team effort, with Thomas Taffe being man of the match.
The same two teams meet again next week in the second round of the league Shield to be played away with a 3pm kick off, and Lairds can expect another hard-fought game against a very good Rainhill outfit.
Lairds Youth team edged a battling encounter against Maghull when recording a 1-0 success thanks to a flash of genius by Jack Gordan to take the points as they closed the gap at the top to just two points, as they remain third in the division, but they have a game in hand on the leaders and are well placed for a title charge.
The first team are at home on Tuesday evening with a 7pm kick off versus Mersey Royal in the Wirral District FA Senior Cup and follow that with another home league fixture versus Stockport Georgians on Saturday, 20 January, with a 3pm kick off.
