Lairds knocked out of First Division Cup

Last season’s First Division Edward Case Cup Finalists, Cammell Laird 1907 FC, failed in their attempts to mirror that achievement when being ousted by visitors Abbey Hey who progressed thanks to a 2-1 victory.

This despite Lairds starting the game in great fashion and taking the lead in the fifth minute thanks to Jay Harvey finding the net with a great finish after a flowing move saw Regan Rubin provide the perfect cross for Harvey to rifle home.

The game then ebbed and flowed but a dismissal for both teams before the break disrupted an exciting contest, but Lairds kept their lead to the interval.

The second period was evenly matched until a rash challenge in the box after 51 minutes provided Abbey Hey with the chance to equalise and they did so from the penalty spot as Jack Tuohy blasted home.

his gave impetus to the visitors as they caused problems for the home defence and pounced again in the 76th minute to punish poor defending to take the lead through Tuohy who scored at the near post.

Despite plenty of effort being shown by Lairds, they could not break down the Abbey Hey backline and they held firm to progress into round three.

Lairds are back in cup action again on Saturday in the Macron Cup 1st round at home versus local neighbours Ashville FC with a 3.00pm kick off.

Lairds reached the final last season, so will be hoping to get back on the winning trail with a positive performance.
