Wirral District FA Senior Cup holders Cammell Laird 1907 FC entertained West Cheshire team Sutton Athletic and eased through to the next round.
Early action saw Lairds well on top and Jay Harvey nearly opened the scoring on 10 minutes with a powerful header, but keeper Tom Rourke made an excellent save.
Lairds continued to have the upper hand, but wasted some good openings despite their play producing some good football through the industry of Mike Jones, Ross Waring and Kieran Frost.
But in the 26th minute, they took the lead when a back post header from Harvey found the net following a scrambled effort. They kept the lead to half time by reducing the hard-working Athletic to no efforts on target due to the dominance of Dominic Caine and Danny Stephens.
The second period was very similar as Lairds fought to increase their lead but Athletic battled well to keep them out and Lairds wasted opportunities that came their way.
That was until the 74th minute when Harvey won the ball off a retreating defending some 25 yards from goal wide on the left and curled home a superb goal past the helpless Rourke to make it 2-0 and seal victory for Lairds.
Lairds next scheduled league fixture is on Wednesday 30 November at home versus Abbey Hey with a 7.45pm kick off.
