Lairds’ comeback falls short in 3-2 defeat to Maine Road

Lairds second fixture in three days was away at Maine Road and did them few favours, but a bright start produced some reasonable chances before the home team struck following a free kick.

Keeper Ciaran O’Loughlan pushed away the initial shot but with defenders failing to react Yousif Yousif fired into the empty net on 16 minutes.

The remainder of the half was fairly even, but Lairds squandered good opportunities as Kieran Hamm brought a good save from keeper Ryan Liversey and Jay Harvey fired just over with a fine shot, and so they went in at half time 1-0 down.

An eventful opening to the second period saw the home keeper preventing Lairds from equalising and then slack marking from a corner saw Ryan Elliott head home with ease for the home team.

Five minutes later a speculative from Abdi Addow from outside the box evaded the dive of O’Loughlan and the home team cruised into a 3-0 lead.

Substitutions enlivened Lairds and they dominated the final half hour and saw James Eaton rifle home at the near post in the 72nd minute to bring Lairds back into the contest and in the 75th minute they scored again as Matthew Beaman netted with a great back post header to maintain their momentum.

Despite piling on the pressure in the final minutes Lairds could not find the equaliser and they fell to a 3-2 defeat.

The next fixture is away to Alsager Town on Saturday with a 3pm kick off.

Lairds reserves open their West Cheshire League 3rd division account on Friday evening at home versus Great Sutton with a 6.45pm kick off.
