Lairds clinch dramatic victory over Alsager Town

Cammell Laird 1907 FC entertained Alsager Town in their last league fixture of a turbulent season, but claimed the points in a battling performance that had a dramatic ending to the game.

A slow start saw Lairds concede after only 11 minutes as Saem Son scored when unmarked, but they fought back and dominated long periods of the half without taking their chances and also lost main striker Kieran Hamm with an injury.

But they did draw level in the 43rd minute after a scramble and Jack Darlington netted form inside the six-yard box. They then kept up the pressure and were awarded a penalty in the 46th minute and Kieran Cartwright blasted home the spot kick with ease to put Lairds 2-1 ahead at the break.

The second period saw Lairds again being the better team especially due to the solid performances at the back by captain Ryan Smith, Matty Beaman and Jack Davies, who caused havoc for the visitors with his long throw-ins.

But a poor forward pass was easily blocked and Town fired the ball forward to Niza Chilufya who placed a shot home past the advancing Ciaran O’Loughlin in the 83rd minute.

With time running out Lairds maintained their pursuit of all three points and when a good cross found player of the game Kieran Cartwright on the edge of the area he fired home a brilliant bicycle-kicked goal to seal the points in excellent fashion for a 3-2 success.

Lairds remaining fixture is in the final of the Wirral District FA Senior Cup versus Capenhurst Villa, which will be staged on Wednesday, 24 April, at the KRCT Stadium with a 7.30pm kick off.

Lairds Reserves are also in cup action when they play FC Kirkby at Vauxhalls ground in the final of the Shield competition on Tuesday 16th April with a 7.30pm kick off.
