Lairds bank the points with win over Ashville

In the bank holiday North West Counties First Division South fixture, Cammell Laird 197 FC entertained local rivals Ashville.

Despite playing 80 minutes with ten men Lairds claimed all three points with a superb performance that prevented their opponents from even getting a shot on target.

Ashville’s only chances came in the opening ten minutes and keeper Ciaran O’Loughlin stopped both of them before being dismissed when stopping an Ashville breakaway attack.

Yet again defender Dominic Hoppe donned the gloves and kept a clean sheet without having to deny any serious threat from the visitors, as he gave an assured display between the posts.

His fellow defenders were magnificent throughout as Matty Beaman, Jack Davies, Marcus James, and captain Ryan Smith, who dropped into the back four following the dismissal and showed excellent leadership for the whole game.

The opening 20 minutes did belong to Ashville, but once the 10 men settled into formation, with Kieran Cartwright being superb in midfield and Kieran Hamm and Jack Darlington causing plenty of problems up front, they were well worth the 0-0 score line at the interval.

The second half was much the same as Lairds’ workhorses prevented any real threat posed by the visitors and created a few openings that could have delivered success, but they had to wait until the 80th minute when following a free kick they were awarded a blatant penalty which Cartwright blasted home with ease to secure all three points to delight the large crowd.

Overall it was a great squad effort due to the circumstances, but special praise goes to Dominic Hoppe for not conceding in the two games he has played against Ashville and he deserved to be on the winning team.

Lairds next fixture is on Saturday, 6 April, away to Winsford United with a 3.00pm kick off.
