Lacklustre Tranmere defeated at home

What's this?

Tranmere hosted Northampton Town this afternoon at Prenton Park for a 3pm kick-off, in their latest fixture of the 2021/22 League 2 season.

Ahead of today’s game, Micky Mellon said, “You want rewards for your hard work, and you want to see what we’re doing is giving us a good chance of winning games.

“The players are attacking everything we want to do, they’re hungry to want to do better as well. We keep pushing and pushing, keep that consistency.

“We’re obviously pleased with where we’re heading, and moving in the right direction, but need to keep getting better and better all the time.”

Tranmere Rovers 0 – Northampton Town 2

Two second-half goals from Northampton Town secured them three points in a 2-0 win for the visitors at Prenton Park.

This result brings to an end Tranmere’s eight-game unbeaten run in all competitions, stretching back over a month.

Ahead of kick-off, both teams held a moment of respect for long-serving Tranmere steward and fan Phil Haynes, who sadly passed away unexpectedly just over a week ago.

Tranmere found the back of Northampton’s net at 25 minutes from a corner, but it was ruled to be offside.

Eight minutes in to the second half, Northampton Town’s Kion Etete placed a right footed shot from the centre of the box to the bottom right corner of the Tranmere net. Assisted by Mitchell Pinnock with a cross.

Sam Hoskins added to Tranmere’s woes from the penalty spot with 67 minutes on the clock, after keeper Doohan brought down Lewis in the penalty box.

Tranmere failed to rise to the occasion and the lacklustre performance ensured a Northampton win.

Tranmere visit Mansfield Town on Saturday 30 October at 3pm in their next League 2 fixture.
