Houlihan’s Birkenhead Sunday Association Football League round-up, 29 January 2023

Great Float Sports & Social came from behind at 2-1 to sink Neston Nomads 4-3 in the third round of The Tony Houlihan League Memorial Challenge cup after Frankie Ward bagged all four goals, marksmen for Nomads were Luke Blondel with a pair a and a single from Reece Kerr.

Rig Move moved into round three of the David Keith Tacy Memorial Cup, easing to a 4-0 win over Victoria Colts thanks to efforts from Ellis Williams (2) and one each for Shaun Weaver and Luke Edwards.

Veronica Conway Cup holders, Dock AFC, progressed to the semi-finals again after Haydn Cooper, Adam Lea, and George Nugent notched a goal each at Lancelyn Glenavon, scoring three against them for the third time this season.

It took a penalty shootout to decide a place in the semi-finals of the Frank Robinson Presidents Cup. The game finished 1-1 between Eastham Rangers Colts (Nath Saunders) and JPL Jets (Kyle Bennett). JPL Jets took the tie, 4-1.

It was doubles all round for Brad Bland, Matty Vickers, and Thomas Sixsmith, who confirmed their place in the semi-finals of the Tony Smith Memorial Trophy for Whitby Rangers 6-0 over Eagle Stirrup.

The Premier Division has been yet again been blown wide open after Queens Park defeated current champions and league leaders Rock Ferry Social 3-0, after Kian Hamm bagged a pair and was supported by Max Herbert.

Woodchurch Hotel took full advantage of Rock Ferry dipping to reclaim pole position after a narrow 3-2 win at KRCT Bidston (Dava Bowe 2). Netting for Woodchurch Hotel were Danny Povall, Danny McLaughlin, and Jordan Deer.

Bushell Athletic increased their lead at the top of the Maxwell Barbers Division One with a 4-2 scoreline at Upton Town (Brendan Dougherty, Scott Billington). Finding the net for Bushell were Ben Glover with a brace, Ben Evans and Ryan Clarke.

There are five clubs battling it out for the two promotion spots. With JPL Jets playing in a cup tie, Cheshire Cheese took full advantage romping to a 6-0 result over Wirral Radio thanks to hat-trick hero, Lewis Gouldson, supplemented by a Sam Hughes brace and Anthony also making his mark.

Wellington FC (Paul Ellison 2, Billy Rainbow, Matty Croft, Tom Bradshaw) enhanced their chances after a 5-2 verdict at Woodchurch Rovers (Ryan Thomas, Dave Harrison).

Prenton FC remain at the top of Division Two after a narrow 2-0 success over Glenavon Athletic, with Luke Wynne and Leo Jones notching a goal each, while second placed Bedford FC (formerly known as Sheridans) registered a fine 5-2 win against Saughall, with Leon Jones hitting a four-timer and Louis Brown adding the other.

Whitby Rangers, who have been occupied in various cup competitions, dropped to fourth but have many games in hand as Barcode FC (Jake Norton, Jack Williamson, Neil Davies) registered a very narrow 3-2 result at Barkers Armchair (Kieran Davies, Craig Nolan) to move into third place.

Lions FC (Mark Head, Ameel Al Gamri) maintained their mid-table position after accounting for Poulton Victoria S&S 2-0.

Old Parks (Jack Harrison, Ben Kierman, Adgie Lamb, John Wellman) put pressure on Division Three leaders West Kirby United, posting a 4-2 scoreline with Eastham Rangers (Martin Marshall, Sean Williams), while West Kirby United only managed a very narrow 3-2 scoreline over Wirral Athletic.

North Wirral Saints served up a slight shock with a cracking 3-2 win over fancied Oval FC (John Skipsey, Ollie Nicholson). Finding the net for Saints were Zach Wilmer, Cal Sait, and Mike Manser.

AFC Raeburn (Tom Brassey) traded goals and points with AFC Tima, as did Parkgate St Germain (Ben Pearson) with Athletic VH.

The honours were also shared between Higher Bebington Kelma (Adam Clarke, Joe Batty) and promotion-chasing AFC Rangers (Colin Singleton, Lewis McKnight) in a keenly contested 2-2 draw

The Houlihan’s Birkenhead Sunday Association Football League are now accepting applications from new prospective clubs to join the League for the 2023-2024 season, a limited number of vacancies are available also a proposed Youth Division for the same season that is scheduled to start in August 2024, any Youth clubs that wish to enter two teams can do so, one team will be known as Youth U/18’s and a second team is normally known as a Colts U/17’s, please visit the League website for contact details.
