Houlihan’s Birkenhead Sunday Association Football League round-up, 27 February

Wirral Borough Council played safe again last Sunday with a blanket postponement of all public pitches, but the clubs yet again stood up and hired 3G pitches.

This enabled eight domestic games to take place in the The Houlihan’s Birkenhead Sunday Association Football League. The hard-working Fixture Secretary changed fixtures almost daily to accomodate the clubs.

Premier Division Corsair FC claimed a place in the semi-finals of The Tony Houlihan Memorial Challenge Cup after seeing off the challenge from Division Two high flyers Wellington FC. The tie was resolved with a penalty shoot out (3-2) after the tie had finished 2-2 at normal regulatory time.

On the mark for Corsair were Lewis Clarke and Kieran Cartwright with Lewis Willingham & Matty O’Shea replying for Wellington.

Great Float S&S sailed into a 1-0 lead at half time via a Karl Barker effort in The Veronica Conway Premier Cup quarter-final. Rivacre FC drew level in the second half but with penalties looming, Carl Murphy hit a last-minute winner for Great Float to sink Rivacre FC 2-1.

Just a single strike from Stuart Hardman was all it took for KRCT FC to secure a place in the Final of The Tony Smith Memorial Cup, defeating New Ferry Rangers 1-0.

Rock Ferry Social moved back into pole position in The Premier Division easing to a 6-2 win over Queens Park. Adam (Sabu) Smith led the way bagging a four goal haul, with Johnny Breeze and Conno notching singles.

Queens Park replies came from Ben Graham and Harvey Sample. It will go down to the wire this season with 5 or 6 clubs still in the mix. Rock Ferry are slight favourites with a 2 point cushion and a game in hand.

A mid-table clash in Division One saw Neston United take the spoils with a narrow 3-2 win over Poulton Victoria Sports & Social. Neston United scorers were Cameron Meadows, Liam Jeacock and Kev Exell with Tom Price and Kadir Mohammed on the scoresheet for the Vics.

JPL Jets jumped into 2nd place in Division Two with a comfortable 4-2 success at Glenavon Athletic (Dan Netherton 2) Kevin Day, Ryan Jones, Callum Lavelle and Carl Hamm did the damage. It is a four-way tussle for the three promotion places.

AFC Park North increased their lead at the top of Division Three to 9 points after a resounding 6-1 victory over promotion-chasing AFC Tima. Finding the net for Park North were Tyler Smith with a double supported by singles from Declan Wray, Bradley Keating, Oscar Sargent and Leighton Clarke.

It was goals galore in the lower half with Sean Lunt grabbing 5 for Parkgate St Germain. with one each for Kai Evans and Jake Roberts. AFC Raeburn hit back with four from Craig McCloud, Johnny Cable, Bedel Zan Bi and a Luke Piggott penalty, with a final score of 7-4.

The Houlihan’s Birkenhead Sunday Association Football League are now accepting applications for the new season that is scheduled to start in August 2022 in both Open Age and Youth. Any Youth clubs that wish to enter two teams can do so, one team will be known Youth U/18’s and a second-team is normally known as a Colts U/17’s.
