Houlihan’s Birkenhead Sunday Association Football League round-up, 26 February 2023

Old Parks secured their passage to the next round of the David Tacy Memorial Cup with a narrow 2-1 win over close and fellow Division Three rivals AFC Rangers thanks to strikes from John Wellman and Adam Lamb.

Also into round 4 are Bushell Athletic who had Ben Glover on hand with the all-important strike at Division Two high flyers Bedford FC (pictured).

Wellington FC secured their place in the draw for the last eight after Billy Rainbow and Nathan Leyland notched a goal a piece against Eastham Rangers Colts. They will also be joined by Rig Move who eased their way through 4-0 at Higher Bebington Kelma; Josh Lyth (2), Adam Henry, and Josh McEwan all netting.

Tom Ashcroft and Adam Walker with a double each, added to a single from Owen Wharton for Saughall FC to claim a quarter-final spot at the expense of Lions FC.

Great Float S&S and Dock AFC both booked a place in the semi-finals of the Veronica Conway Premier Cup with both registering a 2-0 win each at Beechwood FC and Corsair PV respectively. On the scoresheet for Great Float were Karl Barker and Tom Harris while Dock’s scorers were Kieran Hamm and Adam Lea.

Eastham Rangers booked a ticket into the last four of The Jimmy Core Memorial Cup, beating AFC Tima 3-1, with a single each from Jordan Crowder, Martin Marshall, and James Beddows.

Woodchurch Hotel put daylight between themselves and second-place Rock Ferry Social after a resounding 4-0 win at Queens Park. On the mark for Woodchurch Hotel were Jordan Deer, Ben Holmes, Ben Dufton Kelly, and Josh Dures. Woodchurch Hotel are still unbeaten in league action and are now slight favourites to lift The Ryan ‘Gigsy’ Atherton Trophy.

Luke Blondel bagged a four-goal salvo for Neston Nomads in a 7-1 win over KRCT Bidston. Jack Lloyd, Joe Foster, and Dean Jones completed the scoring, with a consolation for KRCT coming from Michael Dobbs. In a bottom half of a Premier Division tussle, KRCT Bidston lost three key players to injury early in the game which had a defining influence on the game.

AFC Shaftes had Matt Walsh to thank for bagging a four-timer, with Eddie Jebb and Travis O’Brien also on hand in their first league win of the season in the Maxwell Barbers Division One. On the receiving end were Woodhurch Rovers; 6-1.

Game of the day in Division Two saw second placed Prenton FC (Luke Wynne) hosting unbeaten Whitby Rangers. South Wirral side Whitby Rangers recorded a fine 3-1 win with Tom Ruffer notching a brace and a single from Brad Bland.

Glenavon Athletic earned their first point of the season in a keenly contested 0-0 draw with Victoria Colts, while Barcode FC (Jake Norton) also shared the points and traded goals with Eagle Stirrup FC (Callum Jones).

The chase for promotion and the title race in Division Three of The Houlihan’s Birkenhead Sunday Association Football League has been blown wide open with leaders West Kirby United dipping at home to Athletic VH 1-0.

A solitary effort from Ollie Nicholson for Oval FC earned the decision 1-0 at Parkgate St Germain and are now very well placed with a late run to possibly be in the automatic promotion positions.

North Wirral Saints found their shooting boots after Ben Dunn and Callum Sait both registered a hat-trick each added to singles from Will Gill and Lewis Howson 8-1 over Parkgate Panthers.

Wirral Athletic (Joe Roberts, Jamie Conway, Greg Beck, Luke Hughes, Danny Allan) accounted for AFC Raeburn 5-0.

The Houlihan’s Birkenhead Sunday Association Football League are now accepting applications from new prospective clubs to join the League for the 2023-2024 season, a limited number of vacancies are available also a proposed Youth Division for the same season that is scheduled to start in August 2024, any Youth clubs that wish to enter two teams can do so, one team will be known as Youth U/18’s and a second team is normally known as a Colts U/17’s, please visit the League website for contact details.
