Houlihan’s Birkenhead Sunday Association Football League round-up, 23 January

All eyes this weekend were focused on two mouth-watering semi-finals in The Wirral District Football Association Sunday Premier Cup, with both games being played on 3G pitches at Vauxhall FC.

Both ties featured four teams from The Houlihan’s Birkenhead Sunday Association Football League. Woodchurch Hotel FC certainly rocked the boat by taking the honours at hosts Rock Ferry Social (Adam ‘Sabu’ Smith, Mike Williams.) On the mark for Woodchurch Hotel FC were Ben Holmes, Danny Povall and Josh Dures to win the tie 3-2.

Woodchurch did take the lead twice only for rock Ferry Social to equalise. But in the dying seconds of stoppage time Josh Dures headed in the winner. Last season’s winners Queens Park (Max Herbert) had their crown taken away from them by arch-rivals Dock AFC who had a 4-1 convincing win thanks to Adam Lea, Greg Drummond, Steve Forbes and Jack Kelly. Corsair made it 6 out of 7 clubs for the league into the quarter-finals of the Cheshire County Football Association Sunday Challenge Cup with a narrow 1-0 win at Great Float Sports & Social.

Oval FC will be flying the flag for The Houlihan’s Birkenhead Sunday Association Football League in the Wirral District Football Association Sunday Junior Cup after demolishing local rivals West Kirby Social 6-0.

Domestic cup action saw Wellington progress to round three of the David Keith Tacy Memorial Cup after inflicting 7-1 defeat on AFC Tima (U Jalo.) Finding their shooting boots yet again for Wellington; Ben Dufton-Kelly 2, Joe Kelly, Matty O’Shea, Ellis Byrne & Tom Bradshaw.

Victoria Colts (Ryan Coles, Gaz Dickenson) are also in the hat for the next round after taking their tie 4-2 on penalties when locked at 2-2 with Woodchurch Rovers. Neston United secured a place in round two of the Presidents Cup by outscoring Poulton Victoria 4-2 (Tom Price, Jacob Wedderburn.) Dean Lewis with a brace added to singles from Liam Peacock and Andy Lewis,

JPL Jets landed a place in the semi-finals of The Tony Smith Memorial Trophy, narrowly beating Prenton FC (Tom Briggs) 2-1. They will be joined in the hat by MSC Eastham who knocked out New Ferry Rangers 3-0,

Just one game in the Premier Division with Neston Nomads carrying on from their Cheshire Cup exploits with a comfortable 6-2 win at FC Bidston.

A fine hat-trick from Ben Kearney and a Luke Ainscough strike was enough for the Lukes to beat close rivals Bushell Grange Athletic for a second time in two weeks and go 12 points clear at the top of Division One.

Wirral Radio FC had Tom Williams with a double and further strikes from Matt Lydiate and Tom Boulton on the scoresheet in a 4-1 success at faltering AFC Shaftes (Mike Watkins.) Bromborough Rake who also have a chance of promotion notched up another win after Connor Hughes who was at the heart of his team’s performance with a wonder goal. Also finding the net were Kie Hughes 2, Robbie Hicks and Charlie Weston at never say die Lions (Ameel Al Gamri, Jay Herbert, Paul Ryan) 5-3,

KRCT FC made it 10 from 10 and still remain the only team in the league with a 100% league record. They had two hat-trick heroes leading the way with Stuart Hardman with a pair and a single from Beno completing their rout over Eagle Stirrup FC 9-2. They have a seven point cushion over Wellington at the top of Division Two who have a game in hand but are yet to play each other. Saughall FC (Andy Noonan 2, Scott Nickson) registered a 3-2 win at Barcode FC to keep themselves handily placed for a promotion place.

AFC Park North (Leighton Clarke 2, Matty Higgins) dented Barkers Armchair FC‘s chances of promotion, posting a 3-1 score that keeps them in pole position in Division Three. They are only 3 points ahead of Whitby Rangers (Matty Vickers, Tom Sixsmith) who accounted for North Wirral Saints 2-1 in another decisive game. Parkgate St Germain (Johny Gibson, Jake Hennel, Jake Roberts) took maximum points at AFC Raeburn (Mike Foulkes) 3-1, while Old Parks took advantage of results going in their favour and just may have an outside chance of being in the mix at the business end of the season with a 2-0 win over AFC Rangers.
