Houlihan’s Birkenhead Sunday Association Football League round-up, 2 October 2022

Great Float Sports & Social sank fellow premier division rivals and Cup Holders Woodchurch Hotel in the first round proper of The Wirral District Football Association Sunday Premier Cup 2-1, Jake Prescott netted for Woodchurch Hotel.

Float will be joined in the hat with Beechwood FC who progressed via a Mitchell Duggan brace and a Nathan Johnston goal 3-0 over Neston Nomads.

Lancelyn Glenavon secured their place in round two with a 2-0 success against Wallasey Wanderers, Connor Courtnell and Danny Dixon did the all-important damage. KRCT Bidston had Billy New in fine form with his shooting boots bagging four, with further strikes from Liam Siddorn, John Mearns, and Ben Kearney, their victims were AFC Shaftes.

Queens Park played host to PLCC and crowned a fine 4-0 performance to claim a place in the last eight. Kian Hamm notched a double with singles from Joe Foster and Tom Black.

Also into the quarter-finals are The Lukes (Ben Crossley, Tom Taft, John Strange, Dan O’Halloran) after seeing off the challenge from Rig Move FC 4-1.

The seventh Houlihan’s Birkenhead Sunday League team through is Rock Ferry Social (Joe Whittle, Connor Doyle, Liam Driscoll) after a narrow 3-2 win over Corsair FC (Kieran Cartwright, James Bayley).

There will be eight clubs in the quarter-finals from the league, as one more cup tie is to be decided on Sunday 16 October between two teams from the Houlihan’s League.

Clubs from the league were not as fortunate in The Wirral District Sunday Amateur Cup with only three teams making it into round two. Most notable was current holders Wellington FC who overcame AFC Park North 7-0 thanks to Ellis Byrne (2), Lewis Dixon, Billy Rainbow (2), Louis O’Brien, and Declan Kinnear.

A Carl Hamm double for JPL Jets was just enough to knock out Bushell Athletic 2-1, while Whitby Rangers hit Barkers Armchair for six; on the score sheet were six individual scorers, Gabe Kwateng, Matty Vickers, Brad Bland, Dom Hoppe, Rowan Whelan, and Nat Lightfoot. Replying for Armchair was Darren Sutton in a 6-1 result.

Despite finishing 1-1 at the end of normal time, Lions FC dipped out 5-4 on penalties. losing to Liscard Panthers.

Cheshire Cheese (Nick Lynch) bowed out to JASGA FC 2-1. Barcode lost to The Gun FC 2-0, and Victoria Colts were defeated 2-0 at Vineyard FC.

One cup-tie that was held over from The Tony Houlihan Memorial Challenge Cup saw Glenavon Athletic make progress to round two with a 6-2 result over Parkgate Panthers (Alex Butterworth 2). Finding the net for Glenavon Athletic were Alex Weston (2), Nathan Patrick (3), and Andrew Mackay.

A local derby took place in The Maxwell Barbers Division One between Eastham Rangers Colts and MSC Eastham; a Dillon Thomas double was just enough to seal the points for Eastham Rangers Colts in a 2-1 win over MSC Eastham who responded via Brandon Thomas.

Wirral Radio scalped Woodchurch Rovers with a pair from Josh Ross and a Matt Lydiate effort. Sheridans FC (Leon Jones, Robbie Williams) and Saughall FC (Tom Ashcroft, Andy Noonan) both recorded 2-1 away wins at Eagle Stirrup FC (Jack Gibson) and Poulton Victoria S&S (Dan Price) respectfully in Division Two.

Both victorious teams are only separated by goal difference with Whitby Rangers sandwiched between them.

West Kirby United (Ben Moffat, Robert Nairn, Finlay Austin) maintained pole position in Division Three registering another fine win when visiting North Wirral Saints (Callum Sait, Tom Fleming) 3-2.

AFC Rangers kept up the pressure at the top posting a comfortable 7-3 scoreline at Parkgate Saint Germain (Luke Hall, Jake Robert’s, Jake Hennel) thanks to a hattrick hero Billy Newman leading the way added to singles from Colin Singleton, Chris Caress, David Duttfield, and Jack Cook.

Eastham Rangers (Kieran Hodgson, Jordan Crowder pen) moved into third place, notching a 2-0 result at Higher Bebington Kelma.

AFC Tima (Kyle Pulford, Mark Goodacre, Cam Jones, Jack Grimes) registered a second consecutive 4-2 win over an excellent sporting side AFC Raeburn FC (Karl Stinchcomb, Dan Piggott). Athletic VH accounted for Oval FC (John Skipsey) 2-1

The Houlihan’s Birkenhead Sunday Association Football League are now accepting applications for a proposed Youth Division for the season 2023/24 that is scheduled to start in August 2024, any Youth clubs that wish to enter two teams can do so, one team will be known as Youth U/18’s and a second team is normally known as a Colts U/17’s, please visit the League website for contact details.
