Houlihan’s Birkenhead Sunday Association Football League round-up, 19 March 2023

Athletic VH claimed a place in The Jimmy Core Cup Final after locking horns with Eastham Rangers (Jordan Crowder, Martin Marsh).

The tie finished 2-2 after normal regulatory time and took the tie 5-4 on penalties, and they will meet Wirral Athletic at Villa Park, the home of Ashville FC, on Thursday 6 April for a 7.00pm kick off.

Dock AFC have secured another semi-final place, this time it is in the Tony Houlihan Memorial Challenge Cup. This is the fourth semi-final of the season for Dock AFC. They finished 0-0 with Beechwood FC at 90 minutes, only to take tie 5-3 on a penalty shootout.

Eastham Rangers Colts eased through to the quarter-finals after Dillon Thomas bagged four of the goals in the tie with MSC Eastham and will meet Premier Division high flyers Woodchurch FC next Sunday.

The tie of the round in The David Tacy Cup round 4 saw Bushell Athletic take the honours 3- 2 at hosts Rig Move (Daniel Woodcock, OG). In the all Maxwell Barbers Division One clash, Liam Whelan led the way with another worldie strike, with further goals from the two Ben’s Evans and Glover.

Cheshire Cheese had smiles on their faces after making progress thanks to a brace from Cam Nuttall added with singles from Sam Hughes and Lewis Gouldson. The evergreen Matty O’Shea replied with two consolations for Prenton FC in a 4-2 result.

Rock Ferry Social moved back into pole position in the Premier Division after defeating Corsair PV 2-0, with Josh Griffiths and Robbie Hicks on the mark. They are one point ahead and have played two more games.

Cheshire Cup finalists Lancelyn Glenavon (Callum France) traded points and goals with Queens Park (Harvey Sample) 1-1.

JPL Jets closed the gap at the top of The Maxwell Barbers Division One thanks to Adam Larway who bagged four of the five goals with Leon Murray adding the other. Shaun Cherera replied for Wirral Radio.

A Kynan Mason hat-trick, supported by strikes from Danny France, Ross Meadows, and Tommy Henshaw for Barcode FC, saw them move into second place in Division Two of The Houlihan’s Birkenhead Sunday Association Football League and give themselves an outside chance of promotion despite playing more games, the result was 6-2 at Victoria Colts.

Saughall FC are starting to find their form again and putting themselves in the mix with a 3- 2 verdict at Glenavon Athletic (Tom Foran, Alex Weston) thanks to Tom Ashcroft, Owen Wharton, and Andy Noonan.

Eagle Stirrup took the honours in a mid-table clash with Lions FC (Ant Povall). Finley Hamill was on the scoresheet with a smart double and Kev Thompson with a single,

Game of the day in Division Three saw second versus first with Old Parks, who were on a run of five consecutive league wins, putting pressure on West Kirby United. The game finished 1-1 with both teams aiming for promotion. Jack Harrison netted for Old Parks while Jack Safadi was the marksman for West Kirby United.

Oval FC (Michael Simpson, Ollie Nicholson) registered a narrow 2-1 over Jimmy Core Cup finalists Wirral Athletic and are very handily placed should the leaders falter.

Higher Bebington Kelma have not ruled themselves out with a late run after accounting for Parkgate Panthers 5-0.

North Wirral Saints posted a 4-0 score against AFC Raeburn after a Ben Dunn treble and a Callum Sait single to keep them in mid table.

The Houlihan’s Birkenhead Sunday Association Football League are now accepting applications from new prospective clubs to join the League for the 2023-2024 season, a limited number of vacancies are available also a proposed Youth Division for the same season that is scheduled to start in August 2024, any Youth clubs that wish to enter two teams can do so, one team will be known as Youth U/18’s and a second team is normally known as a Colts U/17’s, please visit the League website for contact details.
