Local football fixtures have been through a phase of ‘are they on, or are they off?’ with club representatives keeping the phone lines very busy with league officers towards the weekends.
The Houlihan’s Birkenhead Sunday Association Football League did manage to see one team play. Dock AFC are the remaining representatives in The FA National Sunday Cup third-round tie.
Dock took a 2-0 lead over Ferryhill Dynamos by half time and ran out winners 5-3, with Joe Brandon notching a brace, and singles from Ben Wood, Jon Clampitt, and Cam McGregor.
Who needs the world cup when we have fabulous games of football at grass roots level on a Sunday morning?
The last time the FA National Sunday Cup came to Birkenhead was with Avenue FC in 1986. Coincidentally, Argentina won the world cup that year as well. Will history repeat itself with Argentina winning the World Cup and a Wirral club winning the FA National Sunday Cup?
Dock AFC now have a home draw that is scheduled for 22 January in the last 16 (round 4) to AFC Bull. Dock will carry the hopes for Birkenhead, Wirral and Cheshire.
The Houlihan’s Birkenhead Sunday Association Football League are now accepting applications for a proposed Youth Division for the season 2023/24 that is scheduled to start in August 2024, any Youth clubs that wish to enter two teams can do so, one team will be known as Youth U/18’s and a second team is normally known as a Colts U/17’s, please visit the League website for contact details.
