There was more success for clubs from The Houlihan’s Birkenhead Sunday Association Football League in The Cheshire County Football association Sunday Challenge Cup, with another four clubs into the last 8 of the competition. So far that is five teams from seven that have progressed to the quarter finals.
Leading the way with yet another outstanding performance and the third time in consecutive rounds Neston Nomads had to travel to a tricky away tie deep into Cheshire. There were no troubles for Neston after inflicting a 5-1 defeat on a very physical The Bridge FC thanks to a Casey Smith Hatrick and singles from Luke Blondel and Ollie Dutton.
Bromborough Rake was the second team to travel and came back with a 3-2 win from their trip to Sale United – OG, Kie Hughes and Kie Delaney were on the scoresheet,
Rivacre FC was the third side that had to travel away and they sailed to victory to sink Adswood United 7-1. A local clash saw Rock Ferry Social demolish Lancelyn Glenavon (Danny Dixon) 4-1 with Adam (Sabu) Smith 2, Liam Driscoll and Scott Connelly doing the all-important damage.
There will be a sixth guaranteed team from the league as Great Float S&S will clash with local rivals Corsair FC next Sunday, while Dock AFC will play the final round three tie on Sunday 30 January that could be a seven out of eight for local teams.
Dock AFC bowed out of the Football Association National Sunday Challenge Cup after a brilliant game in front of an excellent crowd, at the home of Cammell Lairds. Adam Bagley & Adam Hughes gave Dock a 2-1 halftime lead. Campfield regained the lead to go 3-2 up but with 5 minutes left on the clock Matty Carlin equalised, everyone was then thinking penalties but straight away Campfield went straight down the other end to gain a penalty and it was converted. A superb match came to an end in the final minute when Campfield sealed their win 5-3.
Wellington FC marched into the final of the Wirral District Football Association Sunday Amateur Cup with a narrow 5-4 win over Vauxhall Motors Vets thanks to a fine treble from Ben Dufton-Kelly, and one each for Lewis Gouldson and Lewis Willingham. They will meet Sheridans in the final from The Wallasey Sunday League who outfought Poulton Victoria S&S (Jacob Wedderburn) 4-1,
Domestic Cup action saw Corsair FC earn a place in round 4 of The Tony Houlihan Memorial Challenge Cup after a Kieran Cartwright strike was just enough to separate the teams 1-0 over Victoria Colts.
Queens Park called the tune with a comfortable 7-2 win over Wirral Radio (Jack Gibson, Connor Egan.) Finding the net for Queens Park were Harvey Sample and Tom Black both with a brace each and further efforts from Jordan Martin, Lewis Haddock & Liam Owen. Also in the draw for the quarter-finals is Woodchurch Hotel (Danny McLaughlin, Fynlee Eason, Josh Sheridan 2, Ross Rule, Jake Prescott, Shay Roberts) who eased through 8-1 over Wirral Athletic (Nathan Rule.)
MSC Eastham (Jay Murphy) made their passage through to round three of The David Tacy Memorial Cup after finishing 1-1 at normal regulatory time with AFC Park North to take the tie on a penalty shootout,
KRCT FC (Dava Bowe 2, Stu Hardman 2, Brad Brady, Ant Gardner) secured a place in the Semi Finals of The Tony Smith Memorial Cup with a 6-1 verdict at Saughall FC.
Division Three basement club AFC Raeburn recorded a superb win in the Jimmy Core Memorial Cup 4-1 over Oval FC. Raeburn’s goal-getters were Joe Atherton, Matty Amey, Oli Cowdroy plus an OG.
Only one league game from the Premier Division saw Great Float Sports & Social sink Beechwood FC (Mitch Duggan, Tom Gray) to dent their chances of challenging for the title 3-2.
The Lukes (Declan Iverson, Ben Kearney pen) maintained pole position in Division One registering a 2-0 away win at Upton Town and still hold a nine-point advantage from Bushell Grange Athletic who have a game in hand. Bushell’s Farris Baker scored two headed goals and superb marksman Ben Glover notching the third in a 3-1 win at AFC Shaftes who replied with a wonderful free-kick from Eddie Jebb. Neston United (Ben Pearson, Chris Bushell, Liam Jeacock) accounted for Lions FC 3-0.
Prenton FC shot down JPL Jets (Kevin Day, Callum Lavelle) in Division Two to dent their promotion prospects thank to Luke Wynne with a pair and a Danny Amis strike. New Ferry Rangers stayed on course for a promotion spot with a 6-2 verdict over Eagle Stirrup FC (Carl Griffiths, Finnley Hammill) while Silva Athletic (Samuel Davies, Kal Mwandwe) notched only their second maximum haul of points 3-0 at Barcodes.
Whitby Rangers made hard work for themselves in their push to maintain a promotion place only in Division Three beating West Kirby United (Ethan Cartwright 2 James Shaw) by the odd goal in seven 4-3. Chipping with the goals for Whitby were Gabe Kwateng with a brace and singles from Matty Vickers and Liam O’Brien. Parkgate St Germain (Johny Gibson 2, Jake Hennel) inflicted a rare defeat on AFC Tima 3-1 and may have put paid to playing Division Two soccer next season. AFC Rangers (Darren Caplin< Chris Caress) shared the spoils with North Wirral Saints 2-2.
The Houlihan’s Birkenhead Sunday Association Football League are now accepting applications for the new season that is scheduled to start in August 2022 in both Open Age and Youth, any Youth clubs that wish to enter two teams can do so, one team will be known Youth U/18’s and a second team is normally known as a Colts U/17’s, please visit the League website for contact details.
