Houlihan’s Birkenhead Sunday Association Football League round-up, 12 March 2023

The blast of weather from the Arctic did not stop Lancelyn Glenavon from playing in their Cheshire Football Association Sunday Challenge Cup semi-final as they froze out Premier Division favourites and leaders Woodchurch Hotel 2-0.

A John Adediran strike and an own goal secured Lancelyn Glenavon a place in the final on 23 April. They will saddle up with Dock AFC who had to come from behind to slay George & Dragon 4-2. They were behind for most of the game but ran out 4-2 winners with a brace from George Nugent supported by singles from Adam Lea and Cam McGregor. Dock are looking for a fourth Cheshire title and are current holders.

It is certain that clubs in The Houlihan’s Birkenhead Sunday Association Football League will achieve a clean sweep in open-age soccer across Cheshire and Wirral.

The first time this happened was back in the 1993/94 season when Pilot won the Cheshire Cup, Bromborough RBL/Maudsley lifted the Wirral Premier, Queens Hotel triumphed in the Sunday Amateur, while Ashville Youth claimed the Sunday Junior Cup.

Just one domestic cup tie beat the weather in the second semi-final of the Tony Smith Cup. Prenton FC secured their place in the final defeating Victoria Colts 2-0 (pictured), thanks to efforts from Lewis Handford and Luke Wynne.

Prenton are scheduled to meet Whitby Rangers at Villa Park the home of Ashville FC on Thursday 13 April for a 7.00pm kick off.

The only League game to survive was in Division Three with leaders West Kirby United taking full advantage of the chasing pack having their games postponed they increased their lead at the helm with a 3-1 result at Parkgate Panthers. On the scoresheet for West Kirby United were Robby Nairn, Jack Hunter, and Matty Murphy, while Liam Jeacock replied with a consolation for Panthers. West Kirby are now seven points clear but have played six and seven games more than their rivals which is many, a very interesting run in is definitely on the cards.

The Houlihan’s Birkenhead Sunday Association Football League are now accepting applications from new prospective clubs to join the League for the 2023-2024 season, a limited number of vacancies are available also a proposed Youth Division for the same season that is scheduled to start in August 2024, any Youth clubs that wish to enter two teams can do so, one team will be known as Youth U/18’s and a second team is normally known as a Colts U/17’s, please visit the League website for contact details.
