The 59th season of the Houlihan’s Birkenhead Sunday Association Football League is now only days away and will be the 30th season of sponsorship by the Houlihan’s Variety Club/Houlihan family who do a tremendous amount for amateur sport and Charity.
With the sudden loss of Rivacre FC in The Premier Division and the promotion of The Lukes and Bromborough Rake FC, this is going to be a very tough division and one of the most exciting for many seasons.
Twelve teams will be battling it out for the Ryan ‘Gigsy’ Atherton Trophy.
The first piece of silverware will be played for on the opening day, with Premier Division Champions Rock Ferry Social taking on JASGA FC, champions of The Wallasey Sunday League, at Cammell Laird FC for the Joey Griffiths Inter League Memorial Trophy with an 11.00am kick off.
There was also a late withdrawal in The Maxwell Barbers Division One by New Ferry Rangers. Eleven clubs will participate in the division with only five clubs from last season. Added are promoted clubs Wellington FC, JPL Jets, and MSC Eastham.
Out of the eight new clubs, three have been seeded; Cheshire Cheese FC, Eastham Rangers Colts, and Rig Move FC.
Division Two will have 12 clubs taking part with promoted clubs Whitby Rangers, AFC Park North, and Barkers Armchair. Lions FC and Poulton Victoria S&S voluntarily took relegation from Division One and Sheridens FC who have moved across from The Wallasey Sunday League.
The final four new clubs have been placed into Division Three; Athletic VH, Eastham Rangers, Higher Bebington Kelma, and Parkgate Panthers.
The management committee has not seen any changes during the closed season but did co-opt an Inclusion Officer during last season and part of that role is to suport players and referees from all different cultures such as race, religion, and LGBT backgrounds.
A spokesperson for the league said, “The Houlihan’s Birkenhead Sunday League are very proud to have a very safe football community and enviroment. The League is also currently exploring the idea of adding more Divisions, announcements will be made in due course.”
