Get on your bike safely this spring with free training

Cheshire West and Chester Council’s Road Safety team has again arranged free training for children, families and adults in the borough looking to take up cycling or improve their confidence and skills.

Courses for children in years 6 to 9, who have completed their level two training in primary school, are taking place during half term on Wednesday 23 February at The Pavilion, Wharton Recreation Ground, East Dudley Street, Winsford, W7 3AQ at 10am.

Young cyclists will learn how to plan a journey and ride assertively, maintaining a suitable riding position and much more.

Bikeability Family is a training package to help people living in the same household cycle together. The training will enable families to plan enjoyable group rides, switch from driving to cycling the school run or help other family members develop their cycling skills and grow their confidence.

For adults, whether you’ve only just learnt to cycle or are a regular cyclist looking to improve your skills, private one-to-one sessions can be tailored to suit your individual abilities and goals.  Basic (complete beginner), Urban (quiet local roads) and Advanced (complex junctions and busy roads) sessions are available.

All training is provided by fully qualified instructors and compliment the Bikeability training currently available through the borough’s schools.  Trainees will need to have a bicycle of their own and family sessions are for up to six people, one trainee must be an adult.

The Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Environment, Highways and Strategic Transport, Councillor Karen Shore said, “The health and wellbeing benefits of being outdoors cycling are well known and these Bikeability courses will develop skills and confidence while having fun along the way.  Cycling also helps to reduce congestion and air pollution.

“Whether you and your family are relative novices to cycling or you all ride already but would like advice on specific routes, for example to school or friends, your instructor will tailor the session to meet your needs.  Our Adult courses could be just what you need if you’re thinking of commuting to work by cycling when the warmer weather arrives.”
