Police officers have recovered a firearm found in a field in Kirkdale yesterday (Monday 31 January).
The firearm, a self-loading pistol, was recovered from Kirkdale Recreation Ground following a report three males had been acting suspiciously in the park.
The firearm has been made safe and forensically recovered.
A container believed to hold drugs was also found and tests are being carried out to identify the substance.
Detectives have opened a full investigation, including CCTV and forensic enquiries in the local area, and have carried out a dog search around the grounds.
Detective Inspector John Fitzgerald said, “Every weapon we recover is one less out there on the streets that could be used to cause fear, intimidation or harm.
“This seizure has yet again shown how vital information from the public can be in our efforts to remove firearms from circulation.”
