Firefighters are currently in attendance at an industrial chimney fire on Shore Road, Birkenhead.
Crews were alerted at 1.04pm and on scene at 1.08pm. Three fire engines are in attendance.
A spokesperson for United Utilities said, “We can confirm that the fire service is assisting us with a localised electrical fire at our Birkenhead wastewater treatment works. No one has been injured.”
On arrival crews found an industrial chimney tower to be well alight at the United Utilities Wastewater Treatment Works.
A Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) spokesperson said, “There is a large volume of smoke and nearby residents and businesses should keep windows and doors closed.
“Anyone with existing medical conditions should keep medicines nearby and call NHS 111 if ill effects occur.”
MRFS have asked the public to avoid the area.
Vikki Thomas who works locally said, “I work in Woodside business Park and we noticed it at around 13.00. Initially thought it was a ship but soon realised it was on land. We had to shut all windows, the smell is horrific.”
At 3pm MFRS said that there was an increase in the number of engines on scene to five and a spokesperson said, “Fire crews are making good progress in dealing with this incident, with the fire largely extinguished and firefighters checking for fire spread.”
