Fine Tranmere performance earns a win at Exeter

Tranmere visited Exeter City this afternoon for a 3pm kick-off, in their latest fixture of the 2021/22 League 2 season.

Ahead of today’s game, manager Micky Mellon said, “It’s always a really tough place to go, for a whole host of reasons, they’re always a team that’s competing at that end of the division, so no matter when you go you know it’s going to be a tough game.

“So, we’ll go there expecting that. Knowing it’s going to be a really tough afternoon and we know that we’ve got to be at our best at the things that we believe will give us a good chance of getting a result. So we’ll go there and do that.”

Tranmere played well against a tough Exeter side this afternoon to grab themselves a well earned and deserved three points.

Elliott Nevitt scored the only goal to give Tranmere a 1-0 League Two win at St James Park, with a cracking turn from inside the box to the bottom right corner of the Grecians’s net.

Tranmere came out in top gear for the second half. An early attempt from Josh Hawkes saw his shot saved by Exeter keeper Cam Dawson.

At 47 minutes, Calum MacDonald stabbed a left footed shot from a difficult angle but missed the target to the left. Ten minutes later, Peter Clarke’s head found the ball from a corner, but again went wide to the left.

Exeter had a few attacks at goal, but all came to nothing. It was a fight to the final whistle, but Tranmere held out.

The game ended with a red at the 90+8 mark when Tranmere sub, Callum McManaman, was sent off for a two-footed attempted tackle on Exeter’s Kyle Taylor.

Tranmere host Leyton Orient for a 3pm kick-off on Saturday 18 December in their next League 2 fixture.
