Introduction to Terrazzo: Make your own coasters!

30 April @ 11:00 am - 3:00 pm

Love terrazzo? Learn the technique whilst making your own coaster set!

Terrazzo Coaster Workshop

During this session, you will learn how to make a pair of round terrazzo-pattern coasters using an eco resin material, Jesmonite.

In recent years, Jesmonite has become the go-to material for designers and artists looking for an environmentally conscious alternative to traditional resin based products. Originally used in the building industry, Jesmonite is an acrylic-modified gypsum (plaster) composite that offers an eco-friendly and safe alternative to fibreglass, and provides a lightweight substitute to concrete.

The workshop will last approximately 3.5 hours, during which you will create your own personalised terrazzo coasters.

Aurelie, our resident terrazzo extraordinaire and founder of Aura Living Homeware will show you how to use this “new” material as well as achieving any colour chips and/or base you wish to make your coasters with.

The session will be broken down in 3 parts with a 30 minutes break in between each, which will allow your creations to dry as well as provide us with the opportunity for a short natter over a coffee.

Aurelie will teach you all there is to know about eco resin material, its different applications, and show you some other homeware accessory examples we have been making using this great material.

A little more about Aurelie…

“With a working background as an interior designer, I began my journey with ceramics about 3 years ago. Unfortunately, during the first lockdown, I was no longer able to access the pottery studio which made me research other crafts and activities I could practice from home. This is when I discovered the world of Jesmonite and its endless possibilities. This is when I purchased a DIY kit to try it for myself and I feel in love with the process, the ease of use and little requirement for specialised equipment or space. As a designer, my imagination exploded with the prospect of all the ideas I could materialise using this material. I am now so excited to be sharing my knowledge of this product for you to discover and try out a new craft skill.”

A note about the class:-

The class may not be suitable for people who have any wrist problems as there is quite a lot of sanding involved in the process.

Wear comfortable clothing that you don’t mind getting a bit of water splashed. The paint used will wash off, but avoid wearing your best clothes!

If you find that you cannot attend then you are welcome to pass your place on to a friend who may find it useful. Please let the organiser know if you need to do this.

Alternatively tickets can be transferred to a future event up to 7 days before the event.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

No, a register will be taken at the workshop, it isn’t necessary to print your ticket.

What is the refund/cancellation policy?

Refunds will be offered in the event of the class being cancelled – in this instance we will give as much notice as possible, usually at least 5 days, and offer alternative dates if appropriate.

This class does have a minimum requirement of ticket sales to proceed, so there is a possibility of it being cancelled, but we will contact you five days before if this is the case.

If for any reason you find you are unable to attend then please get in touch and a refund can be offered up to 7 days before the workshop.

This is because we pay our practitioners fair wages for their work- giving refunds on last minute cancellations would mean that practitioners would not be paid for the preparation they have put into their classes.

*Refunds will be given minus Eventbrite fees, unless Make CIC cancel the class, in which case a full refund will be given*

Please bring along a print out of your ticket if the registration does not match the attendee, or contact hello@makecic.org to have them change the ticket so it contains your name.

We can refund your ticket up to 5 days before the event if you can provide evidence of a positive test result or instructions to self isolate if we manage to re-sell the ticket. We will do our best to do so, but cannot guarantee a refund.

We cannot refund your ticket in the 5 days prior to the event. You are welcome to pass your ticket on to a friend or family member but please let us know who the new ticket holder is in advance.

This is because we pay our practitioners fair wages for their work- giving refunds on last minute cancellations would mean that practitioners would not be paid for the preparation they have put into their classes.
