An evening with Thomas Morris

20 September @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Join us for an evening with Granta Best Young Novelist 2023, Thomas Morris, to celebrate the publication of his latest book, OPEN UP.

We are delighted to welcome Granta Best Young Novelist 2023, Thomas Morris to West Kirby to discuss his latest book, OPEN UP.

Join us on Wednesday 20th September at 7pm when Thomas will be reading from and discussing OPEN UP, before answering questions from the audience and signing copies of the book.

About OPEN UP:

‘Brilliant, funny, unsettling. . . Thomas Morris is a master of the contemporary short story.’ – SALLY ROONEY

‘Funny, sad, complex, unexpected, and worthy of multiple readings.’ -JON MCGREGOR

‘Thomas Morris is incredibly gifted within the form. It’s so heartening to read his work.’ -SARAH HALL

‘Pleasurably off-kilter, gently acerbic and sadly wise.’- COLIN BARRETT

The new collection from a literary star – five achingly tender, innovative and dazzling stories of (dis)connection.

From a child attending his first football match, buoyed by secret magic, and a wincingly humane portrait of adolescence, to the perplexity of grief and loss through the eyes of a seahorse, Thomas Morris seeks to find grace, hope and benevolence in the churning tumult of self-discovery.

Philosophically acute. Wincingly humane. Strikingly original. This outstanding suite of stories is bursting with a bracing emotional depth. Open Up cracks the heart as it expands the short story form.

Thomas Morris’s debut story collection, WE DON’T KNOW WHAT WE’RE DOING (Faber & Faber, 2015) was chosen as a Book of the Year by The Guardian, The Observer, The Spectator, The Irish Times, and The Irish Independent.

WE DON’T KNOW WHAT WE’RE DOING also won the 2016 Wales Book of the Year, The Rhys Davies Trust Fiction Award, and a Somerset Maugham Award. It was further shortlisted for the Edge Hill Short Story Prize and longlisted for the Dylan Thomas Prize. Clap Hands, a story from the collection, was longlisted for the Sunday Times Short Story Award. In 2023, Thomas was listed as one of the 20 Best Young British Novelists by Granta magazine.

Thomas’s stories have been broadcast on BBC Radio 4 and published and anthologised in a number of venues, including Zoetrope, Granta, Best European Fiction, and The Penguin Book of the Contemporary British Short Story, edited by Philip Hensher.

OPEN UP is his second book, and will be published by Faber in August 2023.

This event is being held at The West Kirby Bookshop, 6 Grange Road, CH48 4HA.
