Discover one of the great women of English history
Æthelflæd, daughter of Alfred the Great, king of Wessex, is one of the truly great women of English history. At a time when Viking armies threatened the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of Mercia and Wessex, she stood as a symbol uniting the two kingdoms in a common cause.
Until recently, her name appeared as nothing more than a footnote in mainstream English history but, in corners of her kingdom of Mercia, her memory lingers on.
Join us as we follow Æthelflæd from her childhood in 9th century Wessex to her being acclaimed as the Lady of the Mercian and how, in the 21st century, we are rediscovering this remarkable woman and her achievements.
