Tranmere visited Accrington Stanley this evening for a 7:45pm kick-off in the first round of the EFL Cup.
Defeats against Stevenage and Mansfield have left Tranmere in need of a win to kick-start the 22/23 season.
Accrington Stanley haven’t lost yet this campaign, drawing 2-2 on the opening day against Charlton Athletic before winning 1-0 away at Shrewsbury Town.
Match Report: Accrington Stanley v Tranmere Rovers
A 93rd-minute own goal from Accrington Stanley’s Ryan Astley produced a draw which led to victory for Tranmere Rovers following a tense penalty shoot-out.
Tranmere keeper Mateusz Hewelt saved the 26th penalty in a dramatic shootout that secured Rovers the win over League 1 Accrington.
A last-minute own goal by Astley (originally credited to Paul Lewis) cost Accrington dearly and Tranmere stepped up to the plate and made them pay for their mistake.
Tranmere’s journey to the win was on rocky ground when they found themselves 2-0 down within two minutes, just before half time.
A right-footed Josh Hawkes shot from the centre of the box that found its way to the bottom right corner around the hour mark gave a glimmer of hope for Tranmere.
When it went to penalties following the own goal, it was all level at two apiece when Rhys Hughes right-footed penalty was stopped, but to the relief of the visiting fans, the next Accrington penalty was also saved.
It was all even and at the sudden death stage when Accrington’s Shaun Whalley fired straight down the middle and was easily saved, putting Tranmere through to the next round.
Rovers host Gillingham for a 3pm kick-off on Saturday 13 August in their next 2022/23 League 2 fixture.

Up the whites…..brilliant penalties by all – get in. Proper limbs when we equalised as well.#trfc #swa— West Yorkshire SWA (@WestYorks_SWA) August 9, 2022

15 goals scored in 3 games, Mellon is certainly delivering on this attacking football philosophy. 😂 #SWA— Steve Sanford (@Steve_Sanford) August 9, 2022
