Council waives road closure fees for Coronation parties

Neighbours and community groups in Wirral who would like to hold a street party to celebrate the coronation of King Charles III are being urged to begin planning their event now if they haven’t already started.

Wirral Council has waived the normal fee for road closure applications to make it easier for communities to plan their street parties and celebrate the coronation of His Majesty The King together.

The King will be crowned alongside the Queen Consort at Westminster Abbey on Saturday 6 May 2023, with celebrations expected to take place over the whole Coronation weekend, which includes the bank holiday on Monday 8 May 2023.

The Mayor of Wirral, Cllr Jeff Green, said, “For most of us, this will be the first coronation that has taken place in our lifetimes, and I know people across Wirral will want to join in and celebrate such an historic event.

“We had a fantastic response for the Platinum Jubilee last summer, with street parties taking place all over Wirral. It would be lovely if those scenes were repeated in May to mark the coronation of our new King.”

Although there is no fee, it is still important for organisers to apply for a temporary road closure for their street party. They help ensure parties take place in safe locations and do not create unacceptable disruption to the wider road network, they let neighbours, local businesses and the emergency services know what is happening, and they allow the Council to make alternative arrangements for bin collections and other services in the areas affected.

The deadline to apply for a temporary road closure application for a street party is Friday 7 April 2023. For more information, or to download an application form, visit www.wirral.gov.uk/coronation
