After the Christmas and New Year break, teams eager to get back into action were left disappointed as recent rainfall saw most games called off.
Newton Athletic Reserves‘ game against Orange Athletic survived and it was Newton who came up trumps to regain top spot in the CWFL Olympic Trophies Championship. An Owen Hughes double and singles from Dan Christian, Pete Greenwood, and James Collison was enough for “Doves” to move a point ahead of FC Farndon and Chester Nomads in fourth in what looks like is going to be an exciting three-way battle to lift the league title.
Port Sunlight Nomads travelled to Hoole Rovers and came away with three points as Rich Booth inspired Sunlight to victory with a Man of the Match performance. Mitch Francis bagged two whilst Harley Price and Mark Rand also got in on the act for Sunlight as they ran out 4-1 winners.
A Josh Camy double was enough for Championship side Cestrian Alex to shock Premier Division leaders Lockdown in the league cup as they won 2-1 to progress.
In the Chester & District FA C&C Catering Equipment Challenge Cup second round, Chester Nomads IV won by the odd goal in seven against Hoole Rangers to progress. A James Lloyd brace plus singles from Trey Lattie and Macaulay salter did the damage for Nomads whilst Connor Howley, Cal Jones, and Ryan Primrose netted for Hoole.
In the Tarvin Precision Vets Division 1, Hooton Vets extended their lead at the top to eight points as goals from JP Stanhope, Peter McNulty, and Dave Rudge gave “The Hoot” a vital three points against Higher Bebington Kelma Vets who replied through a Carl Butler double.
Ashton Vets got their first victory of the season against West Kirby Vets winning 5-1, with Ashton’s goals coming via doubles from both Mike Parker and Luca Trasatti plus a single from Ste Whittaker.
In the Tarvin Precision Vets Division 3, Queens Park Vets made it five wins from five against rivals Ellesmere Port Town Vets in a close game played out in tough conditions. It was Ellesmere Port who took an early lead when a Todd Reid Corner found its way into the net, but Queens drew level just before half time, when Anton Jolley poked home from close range before Kevin Bimpson fired in a 30-yard rocket into the roof of the net midway into the second half. Mike McGree sealed the win when he rounded the keeper to score the third.
Timmy Bigland gave Birkenhead FC the lead against Upton Youth Vets only for Gaz Kelly to equalize and with seconds left, James Macintosh poked home a dramatic winner to stun Birkenhead and seal the points for Upton Youth Vets.
