The CWFL Queensferry Sports Premier Division title race went down to the final game of the season on Saturday.
Shaftesbury Youth and Blacon Youth Reserves could both have still be crowned champions, having played all their games. Blacon had to watch and hope that Shaftesbury did not win by two clear goals against Waggon & Horses.
Shaftesbury got off to the worst possible start when five minutes in they found themselves one down and now needed three goals without conceding.
Dean Nunn levelled matters midway through the first half when his 30-yard free kick took a slight deflection. Early into the second half and Paul Kane gave Shaftes hope when poking home from close range.
Shaftes then piled on the pressure and despite coming close several times including hitting the bar could not get the third goal and when the final whistle blew it was cheers from the side-lines as the watching Blacon management and players celebrated.
Midweek action was all about the Doug Johnson Vets cup with some juicy looking games taking place, Hooton Vets travelled to Birkenhead Park to take on Division 2 leaders Queens Park Vets (pictured) and it was Dave Rudge who gave Hooton a deserved lead midway into the first half when going clean through to slot past the keeper.
Queens rallied second half but could not find the breakthrough against a resolute Hooton defence and with 10 minutes to go JP Stanhope made it 2-0 when his cross found its way into the net before Dave Rudge fired in his second and Hooton’s third, for a 3-0 victory.
Despite a Joe Crane hat-trick and a Luke Guest strike, Ellesmere Port Town Vets were pegged back by Birkenhead Vets, whose goals came via a Victor Thurgill double and singles from Tony Taylor plus a last-minute equalizer from Jimmy Hodgin as the game finished 4-4 and went to penalties. Victor Thurgill netted the all-important winning penalty as Birkenhead progressed in the shoot-out 5-4.
John Paul Wheadon netted an impressive four timer as Higher Bebington Kelma Vets accounted for Shaftesbury Youth Vets to seal a place in the semi-final.
Warren Kelly continued his fine goal scoring form for Lache Vets as he netted a hat-trick and was joined on the score sheet by Jake Gibbons and Chris Hulse with Lache defeating Capenhurst Vets 5-4.
CWFL Life Presidents Cup third round action also midweek saw Hoole Rangers ruthlessly dIspatch of Shaftesbury Youth 7-0 with doubles from Victor Arogundale and Josh Leach plus singles for Colin Campbell, Azmo Eymond, and Connor Howley.
On Saturday also in the CWFL Life Presidents Cup third Round, Black Horse with goals from Matt Kehoe and Matt Mcardle, defeated Birkenhead Vets 2-0.

Mersey Royal Vets ramped up their title credentials with a 6-4 victory over Capenhurst Vets. Royals’ goals came via a Will Bulpin hat-trick, a Chris Hesketh double, and a Robbo Courtenay single with Capenhurst replying with doubles for both Tony Ashton and Chris Yew.
CWFL Tarvin Precision Vets Division 2 saw Tarvin Vets grab their first win of the season with a fine 5-3 win against Ellesmere Port Red Lions. Tarvin’s goals came via doubles for both Sean Taylor and Kevin Rogers plus a single for Adam Butcher, whilst Mark Lowe, Liam Edwards, and Graeme Davidson replied for Ellesmere Port Red Lions.
Congratulations to both Lache Vets and FC Farndon Vets who both won their semi-finals of the CDFA Pele Vets Challenge Cup on Saturday.
