Chester and Wirral Football League round up, 18 March 2023

On Friday night in the Tarvin Precision Vets Division 1, Mersey Royal Vets defeated rivals Hooton Vets 5-3 in another thrilling encounter.

Mersey Royal‘s goals came via a fine hat-trick from Robbo Courtenay and a double from former Swansea and Tranmere player, Andy Robinson. Hooton’s goal came via a Dave Rudge brace and a Paul Cupit single. This result now sees Royal now in pole position to take the Division 1 title yet again.

FC Farndon demolished Orange Athletic 9-1 and celebrated by lifting the CWFL Olympic Trophies Shield on Saturday to cap a fine day. Top Scorer Lee Parry bagged a brace to make it 41 league goals for the season so far, Sam Davenport and Kieran Hodgkiss also bagged doubles to go with singles from Leo Davenport, Aaron Lloyd, and Lewis Devoy whilst Joe Lamb scored a consolation for Orange.

Newton Athletic Reserves beat Upton JFC Reserves by the odd goal in seven to cement second place with a double from Alex Gibb and singles from Dan Christian and Owen Hughes. James Taylor, Fergal Hickey, and Harvey Rowlands replied for Upton.

In the Life Members Cup first round, Jimmy Gomes struck twice for Shaftsbury Youth, but Waggon & Horses levelled to take the game to penalties, and it was Shaftsbury keeper John McGraa who was the hero in the penalty shootout as Shaftes progressed to the next round winning 6-5.

Queens Park Vets travelled to Capenhurst Vets and a brilliant volley from Mike Burke gave Queens an early lead only for Capenhurst to strike back with a finely placed shot from Steven Hickson. Burke then put Queens 2-1 ahead with a fierce strike after good link-up play with Dotty Bolton before Nick Scholes netted from a free kick to make it 3-1. Capenhurst netted again when Hickson bagged his second of the game for Capenhurst, but Queens saw the game out to progress to the next round.

In the Tarvin Precision Vets Division 2, Lache Vets went level on points with Queens Vets at the top of the table after a fine 4-3 victory against Upton Vets. On the scoresheet for Lache was Warren Kelly with a brace whilst Nick Whittaker and Nathan Mapletoft both grabbed singles. Replying for Upton Vets was Gaz Stevenson with two and Mike Ash with one.

Lee Reynolds scored straight from a corner as Ellesmere Port Red Lions took the points against FC Farndon Vets, winning 1-0.
