Chester and Wirral Football League round up, 16 March 2024

Life Members Cup action on Friday night saw Mersey Royal Vets dispatch Cheshire Vikings with a 3-1 win.

Andy Robinson got Royal on their way with a fine effort before Stuart Jones made it two. Vikings struck back but a red card proved costly and Anthony Cotgrave made it three as Royal progressed to the quarter finals where they will meet Hooton Vets who defeated Parkfield Vets by the same 3-1 scoreline thanks to goals from Kieron Fleetwood, Perrie Black, and JP Stanhope.

In the quarter finals of the Doug Johnson Cup, Queens Park Vets secured a brilliant 5-0 win away at Lache Vets courtesy of goals from Dotty Bolton, Steve Abbott, a double from Anton Jolly, and a Phil Coffin strike.

Higher Bebington Kelma Vets also progressed with a fine 2-1 win against Capenhurst Vets. A Shaun Burgess penalty and a Carl Butler free kick did the damage for Kelma with Iain Forster netting Capenhurst’s consolation.

In the second round of the Doug Johnson Vets Cup, Neston Nomads Vets saw off Chester Nomads Vets thanks to a Liam Jeacock four-timer and will now meet Winsford Vets in the last remaining quarter-final game.

In the Premier Division, Sutton Rangers had Steffan Gittins to thank as he bagged a brace to go along with efforts from Nathan Stephenson and Joe Dowthwaite in a 4-2 win against Shaftesbury Youth who replied with goals from Alfie Naylor and Finn Onwemene.

The race for the CWFL Division 2 title is hotting up as Ellesmere Port Red Lions Vets secured a huge win against Birkenhead Vets. Matt Bush and Mark Lowe were the goal scorers. Red Lions and Neston Nomads are now level on points with only goal difference separating the two teams.
