Over the last year, the council has been working with local businesses to champion those ‘High Street Heroes’ across the borough. Now, the council is helping to look for a new hero to run the main Post Office in Birkenhead.
When the WHSmiths in the Pyramids Shopping Centre closes its doors as its lease expires on Saturday 5 June, the Post Office will close its counters too.
Wirral Council has helped find new possible locations for the Post Office, but a new operator is needed to run the branch. The Council has been supporting the Post Office by speaking to a number of possible partners and now we’re promoting the opportunity for someone to take on a new Birkenhead branch to try and secure its future in the town.
The Post Office could be incorporated into an existing retail business, or open separately in a vacant unit. More information can be found on the Run A Post Office website .
Alan Evans, Director of Regeneration and Place at Wirral Council commented, “The Post Office provides a vital service for our communities. As our regeneration plans progress, it is crucial that the Birkenhead of the future provides residents and businesses with the facilities and services that they need. That’s why we are doing everything we can to support the search for a new operator for the town centre’s main Post Office and we would encourage anyone who may be interested to visit the Run A Post Office website.”
In the meantime, the Post Office are looking at temporary options for the town’s main branch. Alternative branches will remain open nearby on Market Street and Rose Mount in Oxton.
