Cammell Laird 1907 FC returned to winning ways in a hard-fought North West Counties Frist Division South league encounter away at Stafford Town but relied heavily on the defensive work of Jake Doran, Dominic Cain and Danny Stephens as the home team had large parts of the fixture.
The first period was shaded by the home team but Lairds had some very good chances which saw home goalie Rhys Williams make two really good saves in quick succession as Lairds played on the counterattack, but overall it was a half of many mistakes and ended 0-0 at the break.
The second half saw plenty of effort from Lairds as Ross Waring and Ben Wood fought to get their team on the front foot and in the 52nd minute, Jay Harvey broke free in a flowing move to put a superb through ball to Kieran Hamm who slotted home to give Lairds the lead.
They then had to weather some hairy moments as Town fought back with Nathan Davidson making some fine blocks and the home team forwards wasting chances that came their way.
Then with 15 minutes remaining Jake Doran lofted an excellent long throw into the home box for Dominic Cain to head on and Jay Harvey to rifle home at the back post to put Lairds two-nil ahead.
A frantic finish saw Town pile on the pressure and from a dubious free kick in the 82nd minute they reduced the arrears with a headed goal that undid the Lairds defence.
The remaining minutes saw substitutes Kieran Frost and Cameron McGregor have half chances to seal the game, but these were squandered before Frost left the field of play with a head injury and the final minutes were well marshalled to get Lairds back on the winning trail.
They now have six home fixtures in November, with the first being on Tuesday versus Sutton Athletic in the Wirral District FA Senior Cup with a 7.30pm kick off.
