Broadway star tells story of Ursula in musical parody at Liverpool Playhouse

Shawna Hamic (Orange is the New Black, 1776 on Broadway) and RuPaul’s Drag Race UK star River Medway (Death Drop: Back in the Habit) are set to lead the cast of Unfortunate: The Untold Story of Ursula The Sea Witch at the Liverpool Playhouse from Tuesday 5 to Saturday 9 March.

Shawna Hamic plays Ursula as her UK theatre debut in the critically acclaimed musical parody, while River Medway will entertain the audience as Ariel.

They are joined by Allie Dart (2:22 A Ghost Story, Apollo Theatre, West End; Off West End Award Nomination for Best Supporting Female in Beauty and The Beast: A Musical Parody, King’s Head Theatre and UK Tour) as Sebastian and Thomas Lowe (Les Misérables, West End) as Triton.

Eric is played by Jamie Mawson (Vulvarine: A New Musical, King’s Head Theatre and UK tour) and Julian Capolei (Cabaret, Kit Kat Club) as Grimsby, along with Corrina Buchan (Death Drop: Back in the Habit, West End & UK Tour), Jack Gray(Badgers Can’t Be Friends, Southwark Playhouse, Kings Head Theatre), Jamie McKillop (Break My Windows, The Traverse Theatre) and Milly Willows in the ensemble.

Ursula, everyone’s favourite Disney villain from the classic The Little Mermaid (1989) tells her story of what happened all those years ago under the sea. With music by multi-award-winning composer Tim Gilvin (Help! We Are Still Alive, Seven Dials Playhouse, 2022) and vibrant stage set, costume, and wriggly puppets by Abby Clarke (As You Write It, Shakespeare North Playhouse; The Witching Way, Royal Exchange), Ursula and her sparkling crew are telling the story from her perspectives with trademark filthy humour.

Shawna Hamic, the actor who plays Ursula said, “I want whoever comes to see our show to have a fantastic time. I also want to empower people to truly take pride and power in who they are. Maybe you don’t look the way ‘society’ thinks you should look, maybe you feel like you are on the outside. We want you to celebrate yourself and know that you are amazing the way you are.”

Fresh from complete sell-out runs at the Edinburgh Fringe, this smash-hit show is written by award-winning comedian Daniel Foxx and Robyn Grant (2:22 A Ghost Story Associate Director: UK Tour 2022/2023) who also directs the show. With a new script and production, the latest version of this hit show is bigger, bolder, and sexier than ever before. Unfortunate – The Untold Story of Ursula The Sea Witch is at the Liverpool Playhouse from Tuesday 5 March to Saturday 9 March 2024.
